"ALLIGA" en SFER IK, México

SFER IK, Francisco Uh May, Quintana Roo, México
5 de septiembre de 2019 – 31 de enero de 2020

SFER IK Museion, the premier destination for contemporary art in Tulum and Francisco Uh May, Mexico, presents ALLIGA, an exhibition and series of experiential programs dedicated to heightening awareness of the recrudescence of seaweed in the Caribbean. The exhibition was conceived by Roth, the Founder of SFER IK, and Claudia Paetzold, Curator and Artistic Director.

In addition to performances and installations that respond to the alarming influx of seaweed, featuring artists Cecilia Bengolea, Aki Inomata and Sissel Tolaas, ALLIGA includes a day of expert-led workshops focused on holistic approaches to the ecological issues around the seaweed proliferation. Invited guests had the chance to participate in a bespoke tour of Alchemistry, the last exhibition at SFER IK in Tulum, featuring works by Kelly Akashi, Bianca Bondi and Rochelle Goldberg. The experience will conclude with the presentation of an action plan and a Mayan blessing ceremony.

Roth, Founder of SFER IK, notes: “SFER IK is an interdisciplinary creative sphere fostering an insightful dialogue on environmental topics in which contemporary art and performance operate as catalysts for change. We are thrilled to present this multi-faceted, three-day program which constitutes a call for applied sustainability through multi-sensorial channels.

With ALLIGA, the Museion continues to expand its mission of meaningfully articulating artistic creation and nature through holistic experiences.”

ALLIGA features three unique artworks that respond to the environmentally urgent issue of exponential seaweed growth.

Paris-based Argentinian artist Cecilia Bengolea’s seaweed-shaped sculptures intermingled with bats, keepers of the ecosystem, transform the exhibition space into an immersive aquatic sphere that asks viewers to consider and tend to its equilibrium and continuance. A specifically commissioned dance performance will mimic the tides and shifts of the ocean and its flora, ultimately inviting the audience to embrace the movement as a distinct, cognitive approach.

Japanese artist Aki Inomata will present her acclaimed video piece Think Evolution #1: Kiku-ishi (Ammonite), 2016–17, currently on view at the Triennale di Milano, Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival. The piece features a hermit crab inhabiting a 3D-printed shell form, operating as a metaphor for a possible symbiotic relationship between man and nature.

Norwegian artist Sissel Tolaas completes this immersive experience with an olfactory installation containing smell molecules extracted from local seaweed through a sophisticated process in her studio in Berlin. The artist seeks to open a different channel of perception through a sense that is rarely activated in contemporary art.

SFER IK Museion is an interdisciplinary creative sphere comprising exhibitions of some of the world’s finest visual artists, cutting-edge artisanal workshops linking ancestral practices with avant-garde techniques and visionary design, and innovative artist residencies focusing on integrative projects that culminate in new ways of experiencing and creating art. SFER IK enables local communities to access the creative sphere through dedicated workshops and educational programming. SFER IK contributes to the protection of the environment by furthering sustainability through meaningful travel focused on art and other cultural engagement.
