Teresa Margolles & Ignacio Acosta
Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende, Santiago
Until February 2nd, 2020
In the midst of days in which the biggest and most relevant socio-political crisis of the last decades in Chile arises, two renowned international artists present their recent work at Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende, touching upon the unequal political and economic system prevailing in the world.
After being awarded at the 58th Venice Biennale, the artist Teresa Margolles (Mexico, 1963) performs her first solo show in Chile, La carne muerta nunca se abriga [Dead flesh never gets warm], curated by Andrea Pacheco González (Chile, 1970).
Through a series of works and interventions carried out in peripheral neighborhoods of Santiago and desert towns of Atacama, the artist refers to the violence which the system exerts on the bodies, in both structural and historical ways. Using video installation, photographs, ceramic and textile objects, Margolles addresses the Chilean local context for the first time and the effects of its economic model, considered one of the most unequal in the world, stressing issues such as migration, housing deficit and the extractivist mining industry.
The multimedia exhibition Litte ja Goabddá [Drones and drums] by artist Ignacio Acosta (Chile, 1976) explores the use of drones made by Sámi indigenous communities as a means of resistance and protest against the Gállak mining project in the province of Norbotten, Sweden. The Sámi are an indigenous minority living in Sábme, a territory colonised at different times by Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia.
The project, developed collaboratively with that community, highlights the importance of the land and conveys a sense of struggle against extractivism. The passing of seasons in the northern landscape, the tension of the activists and the devastating environmental effects, are fixated by a video installation of immersive sound and photographs. In this way, the exhibition proposes photography and video as a means of exploring the dynamics of geopolitical power.
