Conceived as a critical platform to interweave the artistic and curatorial practices marginalized by the modern-colonial heritage in the hemisphere, Terremoto has grown to become the leading independent and bilingual network and medium on contemporary art in our continent and the Caribbean. Since 2014, the print and online magazine was distributed worldwide and made available to over 30,000 readers, with 24 issues published before its final iteration in November 2022.
Recurring to broad variety of editorial voices in the last decade, the ideas that motivated this initiative succeeded in fostering discursive and collaborative connections between the diverse geographies that we now refer to as the Americas. These exchanges, experiences, values, trials and failures, achievements and lessons learned are all reflected in our upcoming main project: Travesías Terremoto.
After its founding in 2013 in Mexico City, Terremoto has become a not-for-profit Civil Association (Asociación Terremoto) and has diversified its activities, audiences and outreach channels. The Civil Association has encompassed an archive-based exhibition program (La Postal) and is accompanied since 2017 by a publishing house (Temblores Publicaciones), bases that enable us to operate as an agency for interdisciplinary projects to conceive and manage artist-in-residence initiatives, special editions, public programs among other projects across “the Americas.”
Magazine
Each thematic issue was published on a quarterly basis between 2014 and 2022, with 12 editorial pieces, each of which was released weekly on our digital platform. The complete issues of Terremoto Magazine is freely accessible on this website.
Blog
Since September 2013 and through the summer of 2022, this section works as an archive in-the-making where you can find installation views and the curatorial text, or press release, of contemporary art exhibitions that take place around the continent and the Caribbean. Since its creation, the Terremoto blog has presented more than a thousand exhibitions taking place in more than 20 countries.
Reviews
Launched in 2017, this section features critical reviews of leading art events and exhibitions in the Americas. We seek to create critical discussions taking into account both art and its context.
Reports
Reports are interviews, conversations, chronicles, or collective texts related to specific events in order to situate them in their context and unfold reflections and opinions around them.
Marginalia
In this section, monthly, we invite artistic agents to share a selection of images related to their practice or current interests. Images are published daily in the header of our website and shared through our Instagram profile. At the end of the month, the complete selection of images is published together with a text that contextualizes them.
Projector
Within the thematic framework of the current issue of the magazine, and beginning in November 2020, each month a high-quality video artwork is shared for free. Available for a limited period of fifteen days, the piece will be accompanied by a brief interview with the artist(s) to deepen their concept(s) and discourse(s).
Ongoing
is a new section of partner online reviews by Terremoto that creates and publishes original content on what is happening now in art practices throughout the Americas and beyond. This space seeks to expand the possibilities of art writing offering an in-depth critical perspective through an informed, poetic and experimental gaze in collaboration with our extensive network of prominent collaborators. Ongoing provides artistic and curatorial projects with the voice and platform that can consolidate their media relevance while helping us sustain a valuable ecosystem of art writers and critics.
Opinion
On certain Sundays, the Opinion section welcomes critical pieces on public-state and community cultural policies that condition art practices in the region. Beginning with a focus on the Mexican context, the section will soon be opened to other countries.
