La casa de Dalton

Embajada, San Juan, Puerto Rico
March 31, 2018 – June 2, 2018

Embajada presents La casa de Dalton, the first solo exhibition by Caribbean artist Dalton Gata with the gallery. The title of the exhibition describes an immersive installation showcasing the diversity of Gata’s practice. This includes a selection of drawings, video, assemblage, paintings and for the first time, photographs. The installation mirrors the accumulation, collection, and decoration of his home and studio in Coamo, Puerto Rico offering the viewer a glimpse into Dalton’s spontaneous process and his background in design.

Gata’s personal narratives become setting for his works, conjuring the psychology of gender play. The male figure is unabashedly portrayed, both in masculine and feminized states, often amongst flora and Afro-Caribbean cultural objects. Fragmented bodies juxtaposed amongst cultural signifiers reference a surrealist language, resulting in a play between the literal and figurative.

La Casa de Dalton has been activated throughout the duration of exhibition. Dalton uses the installation as his studio to complete paintings in progress.
