#71: Edgar Fabián Frías

Through this section, monthly, we invite agents of the artistic system to share a selection of images related to their practice or current interests. Images are published daily in the header of our website and shared through our Instagram profile. At the end of the month, the complete selection of images is published together with a text that contextualizes them. Here is the selection for June 2021.

Healing takes many forms. It is nonlinear. It is messy. It is emergent. It has its own consciousness and direction. It is guided. Over the last few years, I have explored the ancestral richness and emergent potentiality of cultural production, spirituality, and rituals as an energetic intermediary, an interdisciplinary interlocutor, and as a liminal brujx. Art is a space to forge new dimensions of healing and possibility. I turn towards my creative practices as a conduit, a vessel, and as a sacred sanctuary where I can get curious, explore, take risks, fail, and start over.

I was born in East Los Angeles in a hospital that no longer exists and is currently an abandoned lot. Systemic colonization and unfettered US-American greed forced both my parents to come to the United States as young teenagers in order to provide support for their families back home in Jalisco & Zacatecas. Crecí asistiendo a una congregación de Testigos de Jehová. From an early age, I knew that my queerness was going to force me to make some very difficult decisions and that I would be faced with precarity and uncertainty. The voices and guidance of my ancestors have saved me time and time again. My ancestors, the Wixáritari and the Mexicans that build up my family line, along with my queer, trans, two-spirit & gender expansive ancestors have shared with me the sovereignty of our lineages and the richness of our shared inheritances. To this day, these sacred ancestors continue to share their love, care, and divinatory allegiance with me.

For #Marginalia71, I shared various projects created in the last few years that are connected to each other through this beautiful thread. Each artwork is a spell. Each artwork is a portal.  In 2017 I created Give US Home Spider, a series of ritual performances reenacting the Wixáritari’s sacred journey to Wirikuta, superimposed on top of channels that distribute goods that arrive in the Port of Los Angeles and move through predominately Latinx communities of Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, and Coachella Valley. This project was done in collaboration with various artists and Demi Espinoza, a policy advisor and environmental activist. It was a part of Coastal / Border, an exhibition of original site-responsive performance and installation work curated by Raquel Gutiérrez and Martabel Wasserman for Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA.

Cuerpos Unidos (2018) was a performance art event done in response/relationship with Laura Aguilar’s retrospective at the Vincent Price Art Museum. I both curated and organized Cuerpos Unidos as well as participated as an artist and created the piece Nacimos en Jaulas. Abrimos Las Alas Y Volamos, in response to Laura Aguilar’s Nature Self-Portrait series (1996) and the artist’s iconic triptych Three Eagles Flying (1990). After completing this project, curator Pilar Tompkins Rivas asked me to produce an installation, Perpetual Flowering (2019) at the Vincent Price Art Museum. Shortly after this, curator Justin Hoover asked me to produce Nierika: Santuario Somático (2020) at the Oregon Center for Contemporary Art in Portland, Oregon. Alongside these practices, I have also been producing GIFs as spells on my Inst*gram account these past few years and see them as a deep resource for both myself personally and for my communities.

It has been a huge blessing to be able to be led to other creatives, witches, mystics, fairies, and mutants, like myself, who are also casting spells, channeling ancestral spirits & messages, and doing radical activist work as artists, organizers, & visionaries. Our work is never done in isolation. It is a part of a network, a web of care & transformation that surrounds our planet. I am honored to be a part of this web and to offer myself in the service of our communities. I am blessed to be able to witness the ingenious ways in which contemporary cultural producers are challenging, re-weaving, transmuting, and transforming narratives and hierarchies. I am blessed to be able to add my voice to the mix and uplift and amplify the voices of others as well. I have seen miracles in my life. I have full faith in the miracles that are coming. Your success is my success, my success is your success, we ascend together.
