Obsidian Ladder

Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles, California, USA
28 de junio de 2019 – 1 de diciembre de 2019

Marciano Art Foundation (MAF) presents Obsidian Ladder, the first large-scale solo exhibition in the United States by Bolivian American artist Donna Huanca. Huanca’s site-specific installation for MAF’s 13,000-square-foot Theater Gallery reveals a new topography of triggered senses, combining sound, scent, and live performance. These elements are experienced together against a constellation of carved steel sculptures and skin paintings, along with performances by models every Saturday throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Alongside the exhibition, MAF hosts a series of public programs with artists, activists, and scholars discussing topics related to the performance of gender and sexuality in contemporary life. Events take place on select Saturdays throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Faith Wilding: Embodiment, Ritual, and Cyberfeminism

“In the beginning, everything was green”: Embodiment, Ritual, and Cyberfeminism

In this rumination, inspired by Donna Huanca’s exhibition at the Marciano Art Foundation, Faith Wilding spins a thought-web that connects nodes of feminist and cyberfeminist thinking and making and links Huanca, Donna Haraway, Hildegard von Bingen, and Wilding herself in a process of making with. According to Haraway, the process of sympoiesis—literally worlding with or making-with—lies at the heart of world-building. This concept conjoins complex and dynamic situated systems such as sound, light, oxygen, electricity, magnetic fields, and chlorophyll to make life-worlds. Huanca’s art synthesizes a world from matter, color, live bodies, rocks, sound, advanced technology, and light. Her “performative” installations are haunted as much by the jungles, rivers, colors, language, stories, and rocks of her Bolivian roots as by her contemporary connection to and use of intelligent technologies and machine-life.

Born in Chicago, Donna Huanca studied painting at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and the University of Houston in Texas. Obsidian Ladder is Donna Huanca’s first major solo exhibition in the United States. She has previously had museum exhibitions at the Zabludowicz Collection in London, United Kingdom (2016), the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, China (2018), the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria (2018), and Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark (2019). Huanca lives and works in Berlin.

Conceived in 2013, Marciano Art Foundation presents exhibitions featuring works from brothers Maurice and Paul Marciano’s expansive collection of contemporary art. The collection includes installation, sculpture, photography, film, and a wide array of paintings by some of today’s most important and influential contemporary artists based in the United States and abroad. Works from the collection rotate on a regular basis throughout the year, enabling MAF to reveal the breadth of the collection over time, with some signature works remaining on view for longer intervals. MAF also presents guest-curated special exhibitions featuring works on loan from museums and private collections alongside pieces from the MAF collection. In addition to the collection, MAF invites contemporary artists to respond to the expansive first-floor Theater Gallery and the second-floor Lounge Gallery to create site-specific exhibitions twice per year.
