Under the title para los tiempos de cuevas sónicas, the Materia Abierta Summer Program 2026 is curated by Yina Jiménez Suriel and will take place in Mexico City from July 27 to August 22. The group of tutors include Ariel Byía, Firas Shehadeh, Interspecifics, Kelman Duran, Leda Maria Martins, María Guadalupe Delgado + Juan Pablo Villegas, PATIO Lab and Skye Arundhati Thomas.
This edition will explore the idea of caves as temporal, geological, and revolutionary phenomena, and how to approach them from their sonic materiality. Over four weeks, we will venture into these resonant spaces—sites of political insurgency and connection between mythological and spiritual worlds. We will work with improvisation as both an expressive tool and an aesthetic strategy. Within these subterranean refuges movements of resistance and imaginaries of radical transformation have been conjured. Caves are planetary ears, passages between worlds that connect us with geological temporalities beyond the human. They are living entities and sacred refuges, capable of returning us to a state of intimate contact with the fundamental frequencies of life.
The call will be open until April 12, at 11:59 pm (CDT).
Materia Abierta is a space to mobilize political will through principles of collectivity. Based in Mexico City, its program convenes encounters to facilitate the exchange of knowledges and ignorances. Its activities are rehearsals for reimagining learning processes as shared responsibilities and as experiences that stimulate critical intimacy.
