Torres examines human experience through the lens of a fantastic and strange world embedded with notions of anxiety, anguish and crisis. Mostronamiento, composed of paintings, drawing and sculpture, reflects a building anxiety on the point of collapse. Figures are arrested in moments that intersect between calamity and catharsis, beauty and the grotesque. Layered and impastoed canvases emphasize an excavation into the theatricality of being. Torres’ psychologically charged scenes seductively invite the viewer to confront an existential angst.
Torres was born in San Juan, PR in 1983 and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been recently featured in Flash Art, Beautiful Decay, Art Observed, among other publications. Nominee of the Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, Torres had been selected for the Biennale Mercosul (Brazil 2016), won the Charles G. Shaw Award (NY, 2012) and the Arcos Dorados Award (Argentina, 2011).
