“Las otras en los pliegues de la historia” [The female others in the creases of history] captures various aspects of Argentine and Latin American history from a feminist and decolonial perspective in a six-panel screen, each of which is divided into two parts.

It is called “las otras” [the female others] because it is the dominant discourse’s way of naming the misplaced, those who are outside of traditional morality, lovers. We believe that one way or another we are all “las otras”, because our own existence is in the margins, resisting the residual place to which history condemns us. The format of the device allows us to show what we call the “creases of history”, that is, those less visible but not less central places of it; in this case, the voice of the female others, women and sexual dissidence, which both in the public and private spheres are a fundamental but hidden pillar of the story. The creasing character also allows to stage another of the objectives of the work: to account for the interpretative character of the story and the variation of its meaning according to the circumstances and the looks.

The visibility of “las otras” brings into play another concept of reality, a reality that is not split in any way from fantasy and reverie.

To paraphrase Rodolfo Walsh, our ruling classes have always tried to ensure that women and sexual dissidence do not have history, we do not have doctrine, we do not have heroines or martyrs. In this way, each struggle begins again, separated from the previous struggles: the collective experience is lost, the lessons are forgotten.

As the historian Dora Barrancos says, the story is not that she ignored women, but that she enclosed them in the circle of domesticity and intimacy. The screen rises insurrection before such injustice denaturing it and proposing an epistemological change that is also political. Women and sexual dissidence have another story; our duty is then to remember it, show it, resignify it, build new forms of production and transmission of knowledge, where art and collective creation occupy a fundamental place
