s+s project is pleased to present Fantasia ’94, Sofia Moreno’s solo exhibition of works on paper, video, and installation. Fantasia ’94 is inspired by Trans Noir and personal ritual. Mesoamerican vestiges, the transsexual body, the decadent transvestite body, and anthropomorphic figures play leading roles as Fantasia ’94explores personal mythologies and the depreciation of the feminine.

Sofia Moreno is a visual artist based in Mexico City. She works across disciplines and cultures to investigate expressions of the sacred and the profane, the body, sexuality, religion, and sociopolitical issues within contemporary culture. Her most recent solo exhibitions include BOTCHED GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS-III ACTS curated by Laura Brown in collaboration with HOUSING NY, held at PARTICIPANT INC, NY and Sentimental Archaeology, an Auto-Glorification Memorial at HANS GALLERY, Chicago. Her ten-year project, P o r n A g a i n, was shown by s+s project in San Francisco, LaGrotta Art Gallery in Queens, and at Defibrillator in Chicago. She has participated in collective exhibitions in Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Mexico, Central America and the United States.

Under the collaborative umbrella of the s+s project, Moreno has organized projects with artists and peers for more than a decade. In 2020, s+s project created DNQ (Divas Nos Queremos), a series of microgrants that help counter the financial disparity faced by trans artists and activists living in Mexico, and mitigate the impact of COVID-19. Moreno was born and raised in Coahuila, Mexico and immigrated to the United States in the early ’90s. She studied at El Centro College, Dallas in Texas and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

s+s project is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 am to 6 pm and open by appointment. For more information, press, media, and sales inquiries, please contact: ssproject.art@gmail.com.
