The 23rd Paiz Art Biennial will take place in July 2023 with a curatorial team formed by Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig Ph.D. (Chicago, United States, 1965. Lives and works between Miami and Bogota) and Juan Canela (Seville, Spain; 1980. Lives and works between Panama City and Mexico City), focusing on new horizons with the interest of becoming an inclusive platform for regional dialogue. The Biennial will bring special attention to the diverse temporalities and spatialities that can weave the link between writing and orality with the idea of community with the territory by articulating narratives that challenge the hegemonic narrative but also imagining futures that delve into the possibilities of joint lives.
Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig, Ph.D.
Art historian, independent curator, and art critic. She is a Social Communicator who graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, a master’s degree in art history from the University of Miami, and a doctorate in Latin American history from the same institution. Since 1989 she has been writing about contemporary art for magazines, newspapers and specialized publications, artist monographs, and exhibition catalogs. She is an editor and contributor to ArtNexus and Letra Urbana magazines and the author of the publication Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art (Routledge Taylor and Francis Group, New York-London, 2022). She worked as an adjunct curator at The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, Florida International University, Miami, from 2008 to 2015. As an independent curator, she has organized over 100 exhibitions in the United States, Colombia, and Peru.
Juan Canela
Chief Curator of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá and Artistic Director of ZsONAMACO in Mexico City. He has previously served as co-founder and co-director of the BAR project (Barcelona), Associate Curator of the Centro de Residencias Artísticas de Matadero Madrid (2020-2021), and Research and Symposium Associate of the Oslo BIENNALEN FIRST EDITION (2019-2020). He has been part of the program committee of HANGAR Barcelona (2016-19), of the Present Future curatorial committee of Artissima Turin (2018-19), and curator of the Opening section of ARCO Madrid (2016-17). He has curated projects in museums, galleries, and prominent institutions such as MAMM Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín; Fundación JUMEX, Mexico City; CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Móstoles; TBA-21 Madrid; CRAC Alsace, Altkirch, France; Centro Cultural de España, among others.
