Spain, through the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID) and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), joins Mexico City’s art week activities with the exhibition La cuestión es ir tirando, which brings together the work of 27 contemporary Spanish artists curated by Ángel Calvo Ulloa.

The project proposes to promote a generation of artists, born between the late 70s and early 80s, characterized by its irregular internationalization. “If something is clear, it’s that the limits that formed the basis of the common have been extended. The sense of belonging has become geographically diffuse and perhaps the idea of union is no longer based so much on the location that everyone has chosen to live and work. It is inevitable that the global era affects these issues, allowing us to continue organizing in the distance as if we lived door to door. It seems that individualisms grow and yet they do not stop succeeding collective movements within the state art of today, ” says Angel Calvo Ulloa.

The exhibition includes specific works and installations, not only in the CCEMx exhibition halls, but in the building itself. From painting to performance, through installation, video or photography, La cuestión es ir tirando presents disciplines and names that do not usually coexist, with the intention of seeking that dialogue between space, artists and works.

La cuestión es ir tirando is a joint project between the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID) and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), which seeks to contribute to the promotion of Spanish art and highlights the interest and current importance of the Mexican scene.

It features the work of artists like Antonio Ballester Moreno (participated in the 33rd Biennial of São Paulo and exhibited at the Zapopan Museum of Art in 2017); Fermín Jiménez Landa (exhibited in Manifesta 11, in the Zapopan Museum of Art and in the Artium of Vitoria, Spain); Alain Urrutia (exhibited at the Aldo Chaparro’s Studio in 2019); Taxio Ardanaz (made a residence at the Ateneo Español de Mexico in 2012); Irma Álvarez-Laviada (represented in Mexico by the Galería Agustina Ferreyra); Juan López; Leonor Serrano Rivas; Julia Spínola; Patricia Gómez and Mª Jesús González, with great presence in Spain and internationally. In addition, the spaces of the CCEMx Carlos Maciá (exhibited at the Fundación Marso in 2018), Juan López (collaborated with Galería Tiro al Blanco in Guadalajara), Miren Doiz, Laia Estruch and Marc Vives will be present.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with texts by Spanish curators and critics such as Aimar Arriola (co-curator with Manuela Moscoso, of the exhibition Antes que todo in the CA2M of Madrid in 2010, very representative of the artistic panorama of that moment), Juan Canela (with a broad knowledge of the context and survival within the artistic panorama of that generation), Lara García Díaz (her research addresses precarious policies and self-managed cultural practices through feminist theories) and Ángel Calvo Ulloa himself.
