What happens if we throw a bottle with a message into the sea?

The amount of plastic waste that ends up drifting in the seas and oceans is growing exponentially every decade. How can we reverse this pattern in order to live in a sustainable way?

With the aim of generating a space for reflection on the environmental problems that we are currently facing and envisioning possible alternatives through art, the Centro Cultural de España en Mexico presents the itinerancy of the exhibition by Hugo Martínez-Tormo that was presented in 2017 at the Centre del Carme in Valencia, Spain; organized by the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana.

La deriva de un gesto post-romántico is a project that gives visibility to a new socioeconomic situation and the amount of waste that ends up scattered along the coast and the territory, at the same time that it tries to awaken the visitor’s interest to visualize the magnitude of said pollution.

Based on the discovery of two bottles, one in the Albufera Natural Park and the other in the Cabo de Gata in Spain, Hugo Martínez-Tormo develops an investigation composed of a series of facilities in which the contamination process is analyzed and where the use of new technologies is also questioned. Installations that, at the same time they denounce the process of degradation of the environment, transfer to the exhibition all their beauty, in the sound of the waves of the sea, the caustic caused by the reflection of the sun, which could be a ten-foot sperm whale or the possibility of taking the helm and directing the movement of the tides.

The romantic vision of throwing a bottle into the sea with a message inside it is relegated by a more ecological and respectful vision with the environment. What message are we launching with such a romantic gesture? The message has stopped being in the content to be in the continent. The bottle is the message.
