Art Basel Hong Kong makes its highly anticipated return in 2021 with a new digital initiative dubbed ‘Art Basel Live’. Featuring a unique overview of the diverse art scenes from Asia and around the world, this year’s show will be the first to combine the virtual and physical spheres which allows participation from both local and overseas audiences. ‘Art Basel Live: Hong Kong’ will take place from Wednesday, May 19 to Sunday, May 23 in tandem with the physical fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The upcoming iteration of Art Basel Hong Kong will showcase 104 leading galleries from 23 countries and territories. Expect a strong line-up of Modern and contemporary art across the globe; not to mention a wide scope of work spanning from Hong Kong artists Chris Cheung (aka h0nh1m) and Kong Chun Hei, presented by Hanart TZ and at TKG+ respectively; the thought-provoking dialogue between Miriam Cahn and Peppi Bottrop’s paintings at the joint booth of Sies + Höke and Meyer Riegger; an exhibition of Gulay Semercioglu’s works by Pi Artworks; and a collaborative installation by Philippe Parreno and Rirkrit Tiravanija presented by Gladstone.
For the art enthusiasts who can’t travel to Hong Kong, ‘Art Basel Live: Hong Kong’ will create a renewed digital experience of innovative new features and interactive, immersive content, which includes Online Viewing Rooms, exclusive events, and virtual walkthroughs of the show. In addition, a daily broadcast at 8pm HKT (2pm CEST) will also be streamed on the Art Basel website, YouTube, Facebook, Yitiao, and Zai Art from Sunday, May 16 to Sunday, May 23.
The new digital initiative acts as a bridge between galleries and the wider global audience; and in doing so, aims to amplify the international visibility of its exhibitors by bringing art enthusiasts from around the world to Hong Kong. Albeit prompted by the pandemic, this new digital element is a key part of Art Basel’s long-term commitment to develop a sustainable hybrid format for the ever-evolving gallery ecosystem.
