Terremoto organized the inaugural edition of Terremoto Art Weekend in New York City from October 11 to 13, 2019.
Since 5 years and from Mexico City where it is based, Terremoto develops a line of editorial work focusing on critical theory and contemporary art practices in the continent with an emphasis on Latin America and the Caribbean. We are glad to count on a readership of around 30,000 people per issue and a distribution network spanning over 30 countries worldwide.
In light of the inauguration of the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Research Institute for the Study of Art from Latin America at MoMA and as a way to highlight the diversity of artistic expressions gaining traction within Latin American contemporary art genealogies in the context of the US, Terremoto launched Terremoto Art Weekend for the first time. This allowed us to connect with our audience in New York, home to one of our most important pool of readers internationally, in new ways.
During 3 days, we offered our readers and allies a comprehensive guide of exhibitions happening throughout the city as well as RSVP-based events alongside more than 15 partner galleries, spaces and institutions committed to showing Latin American, Latinx and Afro-descendant artists.
As controversy arises around U.S. cultural celebrations such as Columbus Day and Hispanic Heritage Month, Terremoto hopes to shed light on the current context by creating spaces of encounter and discussion across disciplines and media.
