Sharjah Biennial 14: March Meetings and Catalogue

07.03.2019 - 10.06.2019

Claire Tancons, curator of “Look for Me All Around You”, one of the 3 exhibitions of the 14th Sharjah Biennial, invited Terremoto to co-curate talk series during the Foundation’s March Meetings, which resulted in several guests contributing to the catalogue. The book is published by Sharjah Biennial Foundation and Prestel.

Sharjah Art Foundation is an advocate, catalyst and producer of contemporary art. Through the Sharjah Biennial, the annual March Meeting, year-round exhibitions, film and music programs, education and community outreach programs, grants, residencies, commissions and publications, the foundation encourages a shared understanding of the transformational role of art.

Open from March 7 to June 10, 2019, Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) presents Sharjah Biennial 14 (SB14), Leaving the Echo Chamber. SB14 explores the possibilities and purpose of producing art when news is fed by a monopoly of sources, history is increasingly fictionalised, when ideas of ‘society’ are invariably displaced, and when borders and beliefs are dictated by cultural, social and political systems. Curators Zoe Butt, Omar Kholeif and Claire Tancons present three distinct platforms that bring together a range of works—including large-scale public installations, performances and films—to create a series of provocations about how one might renegotiate the shape, form and function of the ‘echo chamber’ of contemporary life. SB14 features over 80 artists, more than 60 new commissions and many never-before-seen works. On view in the city’s arts and heritage areas, as well as other public spaces across the city and emirate of Sharjah, Leaving the Echo Chamber address subjects ranging from migration and diaspora to concepts of time and interpreted histories, giving artists the agency to explore stories that echo in a different way and reveal differing means of connecting and sustaining a collective humanity.

Concurrent with the opening of SB14, from March 9 to 11, the SB14 curators convene the foundation’s annual March Meeting (MM 2019), in which artists, curators and scholars discuss topical issues in contemporary art. Butt, Kholeif and Tancons spearhead three distinct programmatic approaches for MM 2019, with each curator programming a series of talks and performances corresponding to their respective SB14 platforms.

UPDATE October 19, 2020:

Terremoto and Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) are delighted to announce the release of Look for Me All Around You. This is the last of three catalogs for the Sharjah Biennial 14: Leaving the Echo Chamber, by the three curators: Zoe Butt, Omar Kholeif and Claire Tancons.

This publication, edited by Claire Tancons and Diego del Valle Ríos/TERREMOTO, accompanies the Look for Me All Around You platform, part of Sharjah Biennial 14: Leaving The Echo Chamber. This book charts a non-chronological time-space (dis-)continuum between the Americas and the Emirates, building unexpected trans-oceanic and multi-diasporic bridges for a global history. This volume provides interpretative, discursive, poetic, political, and theoretical tools to compare and contrast modes of migration, production, extraction, and exploitation through a series of 30 newly commissioned context-specific works and critical texts. Look for Me All Around You also operates as an artists’ book generative of readings on performance.
