To accompany the release of our new title Botanical Readings: Erythroxylum coca by Ximena Garrido-Lecca, Temblores Publicaciones is pleased to announce the production of a limited art edition, consisting of 50 unique prints of a selection of more than 700 botanical readings made during the exhibition with the same name.
The Peruvian artist made an installation in the space of proyectoamil in 2019, she inhabited it with approximately 200 specimens of one of the most emblematic and complex plants of the South American region: the coca plant. During four months, the exhibition space was transformed into a botanical laboratory that industrially cultivated coca. The eventual harvesting of the leaves incorporated a series of ritual practices that continued the divinatory tradition of Andean curanderismo. The divinatory possibilities of coca leaves answered the visitors’ queries about their future in the contemporary world. The botanical readings were interpreted, collected, and classified in herbariums by a group of botanical students and researchers from the Instituto de Ciencias Metafísicas Orientales (ICMO).
The readings were classified into the following groups: health, money, family relationships, travel, business, work, fertility, moving, studies and training, purchasing real estate, legal problems, divorce, marriage, projects in general, hauntings, love relationships, children, and miscellaneous. Participants’ names were kept anonymous, but their questions were recorded with time, place, and coordinates of collection. These readings unfold in the publication of Botanical Readings: Erythroxylum coca, where the ritual taxonomy unveiled the multiplicity of layers surrounding coca and its practices, as well as its agency within Peruvian society.
Each edition has its own identification code, certificate and is signed by the artist. The purchase of an edition includes a copy of the publication Botanical Readings: Erythroxylum coca.
