Ramiro Ávila presents "Mirada lesa" at Museo de Zapopan, Mexico

Museo de Arte de Zapopan, Zapopan, Jalisco, México
April 22, 2020 – May 6, 2020

Mirada lesa (Afflicted Gaze) belongs to a project entitled Vista menguante (Waning View), in which the artist—in search of new forms of making art—designs a strategy based on sense deprivation.

Ramiro Ávila suffers from a condition commonly known as “lazy eye” which affects his right organ of vision. The condition in which one eye fails to achieve normal development generally appears in infancy or early childhood. If it is detected before the age of nine or so, it can often be treated with therapy. Afterwards, it may be irreparable.

For this project, the strategy involved forcing the use of the eye affected by the ailment in order to explore new experiences, for which a special mask was designed.

Mirada lesa is a collection of videos made with a GoPro camera, filmed by the artist himself with the mask on. The material has been edited like a music video and is presented in the style of the beginning of an anime.

The video is shown through virtual reality glasses for mobile phones and one of the channels has a focusing effect that simulates the experience of the artist’s lazy eye.
