MARGINALIA #25

By Maura Grimaldi
June 1, 2017 – June 30, 2017

Every month Marginalia invites an artist, curator or project to provide a series of images that will serve as the background of Terremoto, in relation to their practice and current interests. At the end of each month, the identity of our guest is revealed and the whole series of images is unveiled.

For Marginalia #25, Micro Centro de Estudos em Projeções [Micro Center for Studies in Projections] edits a sequence of images from the materials of its archives. Rescuing part of the memory of Brazilian education throughout the 20th century, the presented frames were extracted from the so-called diafilmes.

Diafilmes were 135 mm positive films to be projected frame by frame (fixed projection) and were produced by the Instituto Nacional de Cinema Educativo – INCE (National Institute of Educational Cinema), linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Culture and Education at the time, and years later, by the Instituto Nacional de Cinema – INC (National Cinema Institute).

These materials were used for decades in Brazil, approximately between the years 1930 and 1970, and had a didactic function. These films used to be employed in classrooms of basic education and also in universities as a support to the teacher. They were also accompanied by a supplementary text.

Diverse subjects were compiled: issues related to the natural and human sciences, cultural and technical contents, among others.

On this occasion, titles such as The Sea, Diffraction of Light, Water, and Currency were selected alongside content on the history of the Brazilian film industry, synthesis of Brazilian cinematography, among them the film Limite de Mário Peixoto, and finally, themes related to geography and economy in Brazil.
