MARGINALIA #39

by Malignas Influencias
August 1, 2018 – August 31, 2018

Every month Marginalia invites an artist, curator or project to provide a series of images that will serve as the background of Terremoto, in relation to their practice and current interests. At the end of each month, the identity of our guest is revealed and the whole series of images is unveiled.

Malignas Influencias was a collaborative space focused on the creation of feminist art. It was founded in 2004 out of the need to provide more performativity to an essay written by Julia Antivilo about the existing metonymy of the chastity belt as a prosthesis instilled in the minds of women since colonial times (http://www.malignasinfluencias.com/textos/cinturon.htm). For that, we joined forces with the photographer Zaida Gonzáles and the sculptor Jessica Torres for the first meetings. Subsequently, in 2006, the dancer and choreographer Paula Moraga was integrated into the collaborations. Many people collaborated with the proposals of the collective such as the photography models, the people who supported the transfer of works, technical assistance, support in photographic and video footage, sponsorships in materials, attendance to events in order to finance our works and travels to participate in performances. Everything was supported by our friends, families and the people who believed in the projects.

Malignas Influencias sought to bind together the fields of history, feminist art and activism. From the performative actions of the written essays and the transdisciplinary exhibitions, Malignas Influencias was put together with sarcasm and irony, an attempt of weaving together the invisible network of theory and feminist practice through art. Malignas Influencias aspired to be a political and aesthetical collaborationist action.
