MARGINALIA #18

Simón Hernández
July 1, 2016 – July 31, 2016

Every month Marginalia invites an artist, curator or project to provide a series of images that will serve as the background of Terremoto, in relation to their practice and current interests. At the end of each month, the identity of our guest is revealed and the whole series of images is unveiled.

My relationship with Jairo goes back to the year 2000, when I found him and hired him to shoot a horror short film. Before finding him, he had become some kind of obsession to me because of the type of movies he had made, because he was a ghost of the national cinema history and because nobody knew where he was.

After two months of searching, I found him. He lived in El Tunal, forgotten by everyone. He had an editing studio and a pile of unrealized scripts on the table. After 15 years without shooting a movie, he directed the short film Posesión extraterrestre (produced by El Vicio Producciones). It was launched on October 31, 2000, and never saw the light in cinemas, but it did in art galleries, national and internationally. Thanks to this movie Jairo reappears on the movie scene. Later, Jairo shot Un libro de ultratumba and Por qué lloran las campanas (2003), a movie that he himself funded and has never been exhibited.

In 2015, Jairo arrives unannounced at my office, asking for help for his new movie. I already knew he was in pre-production and the truth is that I was enthusiastic about making a documentary that would register the whole creation process. Mystical communication brought us back together to collaborate again on his ambitious project El espíritu de la muerte, the first 3D horror movie in Colombia.

This documentary is the perfect ground to get to understand what’s going on inside Jairo’s mind. To understand his life, his path, to see why he does what he does.

I made my first movie with Jairo, Posesión extraterrestre in 2000, and now I’m filming him and helping in the process of what he says is going to be his last movie: El espíritu de la muerte (3D).
