MARGINALIA #16

Jesús León Hernández – Domestic Fine Arts
May 1, 2016 – May 31, 2016

Every month Marginalia invites an artist, curator or project to provide a series of images that will serve as the background of Terremoto, in relation to their practice and current interests. At the end of each month, the identity of our guest is revealed and the whole series of images is unveiled.

Twenty years ago I started taking pictures of my friends, of transvestites, homeless people and buildings at night; images of ghosts and the undead when arriving at and leaving parties, at openings, apartments and cheap bars at secret locations in Mexico City; always in Mexico City, always at night. I was fascinated by extravagant people going to certain places as if they were on a movie set.

The selection of photographs in the series for Marginalia #16 are images of a darkness that is always exposed. They are also part of the first edition of DFA (Domestic Fine Arts) magazine, which I launched in March 2016. Domestic Fine Arts is the project I started in the 90’s, documenting the rave nightlife of the city and its characters.
