MARGINALIA #14

by Natalia Ibáñez Lario
March 1, 2016 – March 31, 2016

Every month Marginalia invites an artist, curator or project to provide a series of images that will serve as the background of Terremoto, in relation to their practice and current interests. At the end of each month, the identity of our guest is revealed and the whole series of images is unveiled.

The project I’m presenting in Marginalia is a tour of my Instagram feed featuring images related to the way in which I present myself in social media and the project I’m now working on, which is a kind of Reggaeton Feminist Manifesto, a project about reggaeton and twerking or perreo and the cult of booty as an element of body-modification. It plays with the idea of online persona, online presence and the alter-ego‘s labor as well as the concept of de-selfing (when you bombard social media with information that consciously or unconsciously sheds the notion of your personal identity), like in auto-promotion or self-branding. It also refers to ideas like Internet Famous vs Real Famous, lifestyle and cultural aspirations, and the support that exists among women on social media. Many of the images refer to the human body and the possibility of its modification via diverse technologies out of concerns for aesthetics, gender, race, social status, and, specifically, the Booty and its role in Latin culture.

The images I present on my personal Instagram are also mixed with those of the show I’m curating, #BAE #AQN @beforeanyoneelse_antesquenadie. This is a show currently on Instagram, which was launched at Yautepec gallery in October 2015. During the presentation, there was a performance in which I posted and the live feed was projected on the gallery wall, while DJs from the collective N.A.A.F.I were in charge of the music, giving the audience, and Instagram users in general, the option to like, comment on and regram the artists’ pieces presented as posts on Instagram.
