Páramo presents the exhibition Margen-Borde-Orilla, curated and organized by Patrick Charpenel. The exhibition presents nine extraordinary modern and contemporary Mexican artists who produced work between 1912 to the present. The exhibition highlights these individual artists who worked exclusively within the margins, borders, and edges of cultural production systems. Within the work of these nine artists, the exhibition claims creative autonomy as the supreme value, away from the margins and values imposed by the media and the market.

The exhibition at Páramo displays over one hundred and fifty compositions, each executed in diverse techniques and various mediums, including: photography, film, sculpture, drawing, and painting. The abstract portraits by Marius de Zayas, the shapeless constructions by Germán Cueto, the concentric forms by Eduardo Terrazas, the pictorial gestures by Jesús “Chucho” Reyes Ferreira, the body-weight rock sculptures by Juan Kraeppellin, the ethnographic illustrations by Miguel Covarrubias, the mythological masses by Germán Venegas, and the delirious eroticism by Francisco Toledo together make a universe of Mexico, which is then profoundly investigated through the photographs by Graciela Iturbide. These works reveal a series of singular worlds, unveiled as a set of individual visions with great courage and artistic personality.

Today we are experiencing a moment where the media marks the limit of thinking, and where everything appears to flow complacently inside the margins, borders, and edges of the art market. The works included in this exhibition, produced during the span of one hundred years, are the antithesis of this complacency. The compositions of these courageous artists move steadfastly in the other direction. The “eccentricity” that characterizes these combatant artistic souls is the biggest treasure —it is the action that always develops from outside of the center, based on convictions that are born, most profoundly, in the spirit of autonomy.
