La materia como estado mental

Galería CURRO, Guadalajara, Jalisco, México
October 12, 2017 – December 22, 2017

Mauricio Alejo (Mexico City, 1969) is a Mexican artist with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from New York University. His work is focused on the creation of ” sculptural moments or events” captured in time and presented in photography or video. Alejo seeks to position seemingly familiar objects in a new narrative that doesn’t follow the mere decontextualization or its (dis)functionality, but rather the artist’s intuition according to time and space, materiality, displacement and physical force.

For this exhibition, Alejo highlights his methods of image production by representing objects in an ambiguous space, between the artistic practice and the catalog execution or the editorial photography. The series of works seems to emphasize the malleable nature of the photographic discourse, while producing a dissonance between the futility of the object or the situation represented and the context of a specific photographic style, crossed by different social, political and economic practices.

These sculptural propositions may reach an idea of exhaustion of the object in the process of goods and information circulation, where everything acquires the value of merchandise. In this sense, the exhibition’s discourse happens within the conflictive relations between the artistic practice, the consumption of goods and the art market.
