Impresiones del tiempo

ESPAC, Ciudad de México
November 11, 2017 – March 31, 2018

Impressions of Time is based on a selection of artworks and actions that explore ideas and processes originating in audiovisual production. This project explores the technical nature of cinematographic phenomena asgerywell as ties to other artistic practices through two exhibitions, guided visits, project presentations, workshops, a projection session, a roundtable discussion and the publication of selected texts by critics. Its main thematic guidelines are space, screen, image building, and time. The title was taken from a chapter in the book Sculpting in Time by Andrei Tarkovsky entitled “Imprinted time,” where the filmmaker discusses the characteristics of the cinematographic craft as well as its similarities and differences with other arts.

The first exhibition, inaugurated on Saturday, November 11, is comprised by two thematic areas. The first approaches the “outer” space of audiovisual production, that is to say, the off-screen area, the projection surface and the function and place of the viewing audience. On the other hand, the show explores the basic characteristics of the “interior” of the audiovisual apparatus, such as the construction of cinematographic imagery, time, and content. The second exhibition, to be presented in early March, 2018, will consist of an individual project by Daniel Monroy entitled We Know What Fire Is Like, which proposes to create a cinematographic experience in which there is no moving ima.

The Audiovisual Overflow Program surveys the convergences and divergences of artistic praxis with the audiovisual genre itself. It also delves into experimental exercises that expand our notion of moving pictures while at the same time, occupying an exhibition space in order to critically reflect on the historical conventions associated with this media. The program is conversant with the ESPAC mission, which centers on proposals that offer critical perspectives on the production and circulation of imagery today.
