Enterradas en luz

Sala Mendoza, Caracas, Venezuela
June 1, 2019 – August 31, 2019

In the space of Librería at Sala Mendoza, the Venezuelan artist Adriana Genel presents Enterradas en luz, a series of see-through, acrylic boxes from which delicate fragments, both visual and discursive, unfold, at the same time covered by “paper clouds” that, ultimately, reveal as much as they unveil. The artist adopts, in lieu of the form, the written word as a medium to reveal its multiplicities and to demand the curious and creative gaze of the spectator, who will have to approach and even encroach himself among each of the pieces in order to fully appreciate them. Each box thus becomes a window and a stage, and if, in the words of the poet Octavio Armand, “meaning appeals with insistence to the senses, perhaps it will find light in words and words in light.”

Adriana Genel (Mexico, 1971) is a Venezuelan artist and designer, schooled between Caracas, Venezuela, and Brussels, Belgium. Her most recent collaborative exhibitions include Barrio Joven (Carmen Araujo Arte. Buenos Aires, Argentina. 2011), I Salón Nacional Lo uno y lo diverso. Confrontación de arte sobre papel (Galería Universitaria Braulio Salazar de la Universidad de Carabobo, Venezuela. 2010), De jóvenes para jóvenes (Galería Templarios. Caracas, Venezuela. 2009), 33o Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales Mauro Mejías del Ateneo de Guacara, Mención Gráfica (2009), 38o Salón Juan Lovera, Mención Dibujo (2009) and Souvenirs del siglo XXI (British Council. Museo del Diseño y la Estampa Carlos Cruz-Diez. Caracas, Venezuela. 2008). Enterradas en luz is her second solo exhibition, after Además de silencio (Carmen Araujo Arte. Caracas, Venezuela. 2013).

The Sala Mendoza is an alternative, independent and non-profit exhibition space located in Caracas, Venezuela, dedicated to promoting contemporary artistic practices. Since its foundation in 1956, it has maintained a continuous commitment to national and international artistic production, turning into a platform that stimulates the exchange of knowledge to find new ways of approaching art adapted to the intense and plural social transformations of today.
