Javier Orfón presents "El ojo de arcilla" at Hidrante, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico
July 10, 2020 – August 14, 2020

Hidrante is pleased to present its 27th exhibition, El ojo de arcilla, by Javier Orfón.

Javier Orfón’s work is informed by the concept of topophilia, a strong sense of place, that encompasses the sensations and aesthetic experiences bound to a particular space. His experience and connection to the sites guides his multidisciplinary research through the fields of geography, anthropology, ecology, architecture, and oral history. This research nourishes his practice to create an atemporal archeology of the inquired site, in which he explores the human condition, nature, the anthropogenic impact, memory, otherness, landscape and globalization.

El ojo de arcilla groups 3 ceramic sculpture installations that present 3 years of exploration with native clays and sands of specific spaces of the Puerto Rican archipelago. The result of the work are narrative histories of the context and times in which the artist belongs or interacts with his intuition and contemplation. The work also makes reference to the materials and techniques of ancestral Antillean ceramics and the communities created around them.

Javier Orfón is a Puerto Rican artist who lives and works in San Lorenzo, PR. Recent exhibitions include Pozuelo, Embajada, San Juan PR (2019); Muestra Nacional de Arte 2018, Antiguo Arsenal de la Marina Española Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, San Juan PR; About Clay, Souvenir154, San Juan, PR; Los ojos cuadrados de Atabeyra, collaborative project with Escuela de Eficios by artist Jorge González, Aguirre MX, CDMX MX (2018).
