Descontinentalizar el archipiélago

Hidrante, San Juan, Puerto Rico
July 13, 2018 – August 10, 2018

Arnaldo Rodríguez Bagué’s practice as an artist, curator, and researcher is centered on the appropriation and reformulation of contexts, genealogies and archives by way of video, photography, documentary cinema, and curating as performance. His artistic research, Caribe-Yet-To-Come, operates in the intersections of insular geography, continental science fiction, and the performance of the archipelagos to generate decontinentalized geomythologies between the living and the nonliving.

For Descontinentalizar el archipiélago, his first solo exhibition, Rodríguez Bagué presents a selection of digital drawings and videos that speculate on the possible cartographies of the Caribbean. Combining science, aesthetics, and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively. Rodríguez Bague’s work takes this premise and combines it with a notion of performance that infuses the territory with a performative agency, to better understand the dynamics between the monolithic continent and the archipelagic islands.

Arnaldo Rodríguez Bagué lives and works between Evanston, US, and San Juan, PR. He’s currently in process of completing his Ph.D. in Performance Studies at Northwestern University. Recent showings of his work include ISLXLSI: Last Island on Earth, Wesleyan University, Middletown, US (2018), and Soñé con la guerra y no me mataron, Beta-Local, San Juan, PR (2017). He has curated recent exhibitions such as Pisotón: antes de todo género (2016), and Quiebre: Primer Festival de Performance de Asuntos Efímeros (2016).
