"A New Territory": solo show by artist-in-residence Baseera Khan at Lux Art Institute, USA

City of Encinitas, California, USA
April 10, 2021 – June 5, 2021

Lux Art Institute welcomes its fourth Artist-in-Residence of its 14th season, A New Territory, Baseera Khan. Khan’s residency at Lux is an extension of their work that combines historical and contemporary cultural markers in order to question institutional structures of heteronormativity and othering within migrant and multicultural communities that are often underrepresented.

Through a practice that intertwines collage, sculpture, and performance, Khan challenges “western” ideologies based in colonial taxonomies that reduce people of different places, cultures, and experiences into a singular identity as the ‘Other’. As Khan maps geographies of the future, they create intersectional portraits that layer fragments of identity and reveal how ostracizing systems of control impact the lived experiences in a multiplicity of ways.

“I wish western fashion would acknowledge their heavy reliance upon African and South Asian aesthetic histories. I am exhibiting silhouettes, textiles, collages, and soft sculpture. Is that all I do? No. It’s how I do, day by day,” Khan explains as they comment on the appropriative nature of internationally acclaimed fashion companies as an influence on the work they will be exhibiting with Lux.

Khan is eager to begin their residency at Lux viewing this time as an opportunity for renewal while preparing for upcoming exhibitions. With the ability to view their body of work from new perspectives away from the bustling metropolis of New York City, Khan will reflect upon the three bodies of work that will be exhibited at Lux: Psychedelic Prayer Rugs, Seats, and their Archival Collages series. Khan will envision new pathways for their work by incorporating elements such as poetry and video.

Lux Art Institute is redefining the museum experience with the region’s only artist-in-residence program that invites artists to live and work on site while producing a commissioned work of art. Lux is committed to making art more accessible and to inspire creative thinking. At Lux, visitors don’t just see finished works of art, they see the artistic process firsthand by observing internationally recognized artists in a working studio environment.

Baseera Khan was born in Texas and is based in New York City. Khan was a recipient of the Brooklyn Museum’s second annual UOVO Prize (2020), the BRIC Colene Brown Art Prize, and the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant (2019). Their work is featured in several public art collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim, Kadist, San Francisco, Walker Art Center, MI, and New Orleans Museum of Art, LA. They received an M.F.A. from Cornell University (2012) and a B.F.A. from the University of North Texas (2005). Khan has exhibited at the Aspen Art Museum, CO; Jewish Museum of Art in New York, NY; and has an upcoming solo exhibition with the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York. Khan is currently represented by Simone Subal Gallery in New York, NY. A New Territory is Khan’s first solo exhibition on the West Coast.
