Mónica E. Kupfer

Mónica Kupfer (Panama, 1957) is a historian, curator, art critic and editor, recognized locally and internationally for her curatorial work, as well as her contribution to the development of Panamanian art through the Panama Art Biennial. She is also known for her research on Panamanian women artists, the first in the country.

D. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin. She holds a Master’s degree in Art History from Tulane University in New Orleans and the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany, and a Bachelor’s degree with specializations in printmaking and art history.

Monica Kupfer was the founding director of the Panama Art Biennial, created in 1992, as well as director of the Fundación Arte y Cultura, a non-profit organization that promotes cultural development in Panama since 1999. She was the first curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama, where she is currently a member of the Technical Council.

She has served as a juror, lecturer and contributor to art encyclopedias, in addition to being a correspondent for Art Nexus magazine.

The Panama Art Biennial was founded in 1992 by Monica Kupfer and Irene Escoffery.
