Beatriz Santiago Muñoz: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors marks the artist’s first exhibition in a US museum. Beatriz Santiago Muñoz (b. 1972, San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives in San Juan) creates video works that explore Caribbean environments, politics, and identity —specifically in Haiti and Puerto Rico—and counter stereotypical depictions of the region and its cultures. Santiago Muñoz focuses on indigenous cosmologies, post‐military spaces, and syncretic religions from the Caribbean, and borrows from the disciplines of performance, film, visual ethnography, and anthropology. Influenced by experimental cinema, she relies on observational research to generate nonlinear narratives that challenge the boundaries between documentary and fiction.

In her videos, the artist utilizes a durational style in which the camera is fixed on specific subjects; the participants are not professional actors, but instead everyday people who have direct experiences with the sites portrayed in her works. Santiago Muñoz utilizes the tropes of documentary filmmaking to create videos that show how locals relate to their own cosmologies and realities, promoting an alternative portrayal of places previously known in Western culture foremost through their exoticized depictions.

Along with these videos works, the exhibition includes a selection of sculptures and photographs, as well as a vinyl record that relates to the works on view. In order to simulate a cinematic experience in the gallery, a single projection box screens the four unique videos, one after another, allowing the audience the opportunity to experience different works with each new visit to the exhibition.
